Nina Smith | Account Manager
I’ve been working in media for seven years and have been at MediaCom for five of those. And while there have been many achievements along the way, winning Campaign’s “30 under 30” this year is the highlight of my career so far.
My media career began at ITV as a media owner, before moving to MediaCom. The transition from media owner to agency was a real revelation as, for the first time, I was part of the full media planning process and not just responsible for my bit on the television. I was thrown in at the deep end and had to learn a ream of new media channels in super quick-time.
Luckily, as I’ve developed at MediaCom, I’ve been able to focus on my areas of strength above all else. For instance, I’m a naturally creative person and, having grown into a planner/strategist role, I have been allowed to execute some of that creativity in media planning. Although I still haven’t achieved my media dream of booking a blimp, it is still on my hit list for the next 10 years!
Something I am most thankful for is the range of global brands I’ve had the pleasure of working with at MediaCom. Although it is common for brands to feel that being outside of London limits their opportunities, my experiences couldn’t be more different. Manchester boasts a wealth of talent and, with media hubs such as Media City bringing in the big brands, I think there has never been a greater time to be working in this sector in the North West.
I entered Campaign’s “30 Under 30” because I wanted to represent young talent in the regions and showcase some of the fantastic work that I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of. Having just turned 29 it was now or never so I’m incredibly happy that I did, and excited for the next chapter of my career!
This year, I am the only person outside of London to win this. This is a massive step in the right direction and demonstrates that talent is growing in the regions and companies are proud of their employees and encouraging them to enter. Next year, hopefully there will be more winners demonstrating the spread of talent across the country!
