As part of a regular visit in partnership with the charity Food Cycle, five MediaCom staff headed over to the Roby Church in Longsight on Wednesday, to channel their inner Ainsley Harriet and help out with a great community initiative.

Every month we send over a team of MediaCommers to Roby church in Longsight to help prepare, cook, and serve a tasty three course meal for vulnerable members of the community. Our lovely lot this month came in the delightful form of Josie Miles, Steph Oriet, Weronika Nycz, myself, and head of our Charity Committee, Will Challoner.

We had a bounty of food to use, which had kindly been donated by various supermarkets to reduce food waste (food which could no longer be sold but was still perfectly edible). As well as providing a warm and welcoming experience for diners, we also aim to serve up a nourishing meal that will provide much needed vitamins – especially important as we enter flu season.

The feast we created consisted of carrot and coriander soup as starter, a main course of mixed vegetable lasagna with curried potato wedges and salad, and a belly busting dessert of apple crumble and custard. Side dishes of broccoli and sprouts (all seasoned to taste – delish!) and heaps of bread made sure we all had full bellies. All of our diners went out of their way to say thank you and compliment us on all the dishes we served.

We kept the menu simpler than previous visits, which gave us more time to sit and talk with our diverse range of guests. We met people from all walks of life and Steph even got herself an admirer in the form of our regular guest Jay (MJ) – so expect wedding bells soon!

The friendly and passionate people that come along each month really do help make a difference to the local community and we are always looking for volunteers (no cooking experience necessary!) to come along and get involved. Even if you think you can’t cook, there’s always something to do and helping hands are always welcome.

I’d just like to say a MASSIVE thank you to this month’s volunteers for really making it a fun and rewarding experience by working so hard and being such a great team!
